Wall Beds

Posted on Wed, Sep 8, 2010 by Benny in Beds

Wall beds, also known as Murphy beds or fold away beds, are special beds, which can be flipped over and hidden in a wall cabinet or closet when not needed. While other wall bed cabinets come with cabinet doors to conceal the bed, others have no doors. Instead, the underside of the bed is made with a solid board to make it look as if it were part of the wall when flipped over.

Since they are designed to be easily “folded away” when not needed, wall beds do not have headboards, footboards, railings, and box springs. The absence of box springs and mattress support, wall beds are compensated by bolts at each of corner or the bed holding the bed mattress or bed cushion in place.

What are the different models of wall beds out in the market?

Wall beds come in several designs and styles, some of which are Adam Double Horizontal Wall Bed, Lollipop in Bunk Wall Bed, Master Wall Bed, Modeligne Wall Bed, Poppiponte Wall Bed, Ulisse Double Wall Bed, and Scali Wall Bed. Poppi Horizontal Wall Bed, Melamix Wall Bed, Lollipop Folding Bunkbed, Telemaco Single Wall Bed, and  Flexo Wall Bed are also available.

What are the standard sizes of wall beds?

Wall beds also come in different sizes to fit various needs and preferences. The standard width measurements for wall beds are 3 feet, 4 feet, 4 feet 6 inches, and 5 feet. There are also special wall beds that measure 6 feet 3 inches and 6 feet 6 inches long.

How are wall beds flipped over?

Folding away wall beds is as simple as that: you lift one end of the bed that is not connected to the inside of the wall bed cabinet and that’s it. Just close the cabinet doors if there are. Some wall beds are designed to open vertically, while others open horizontally.

Wall beds are commonly used in homes with small bedroom space. Examples of these are mobile homes and apartments. Wall beds save room and bedroom floor space, since the space it occupies when it is laid down can be used for other purposes when the bed is folded away.

Sometimes, wall beds come with cabinets having mirrors, glass, or even lighting. In some cases, wall bed cabinets are modified such that there is more storage space for other things such as bedding, clothes, television, radio computer, and other entertainment gadgets and bedroom things.
