Trundle Bed

A trundle bed is a special piece of bedroom furniture composed of two beds: one that is regular and another that is slightly smaller and on casters or rollers. Also known as “truckle bed,” the trundle bed is common in households and bedrooms with limited space. The second bed with the rollers or casters is usually kept under the regular bed when not needed, thus, saving room space when necessary. 

On rollers, the second bed is easy to navigate within and even outside the room. This means that a trundle bed set can easily provide two separate bed spaces when needed. The second bed can also be popped up to the same level of the first bed, making it more appropriate for adults.

Though the idea can be viewed as somewhat modern or contemporary, trundle beds actually date back to the Middle Ages. Besides the brilliant idea of space saving and convenient way of keeping bed space ready for sleepover guests, trundle beds satisfy people’s need for discrete storage space.

Features of a trundle bed

Trundle beds are usually used as daybeds. Both the first (regular) and the second (bed on casters) do not have a box spring because of the need to store one under the other. With the mattress removed, the bed below can also be used for storage of various objects such as clothes and other bedroom needs like pillows and blankets. They provide an excellent solution for rooms where two bed spaces aren’t always or frequently needed. By storing the second bed beneath the first bed, the space that the second bed usually occupies can also be used for other purposes such as for playing (in the case of kid bedrooms), working, or simply to provide ample space to move around the room.

Like bunk beds, trundle beds are also common in children’s bedrooms. They usually come in twin or single bed size, though the second bed is usually slightly smaller to easily fit underneath the first bed. Because of its unique organization, space saving feature, and effective use of both vertical and horizontal room space, trundle beds provide an ideal option for kids’ and even adults’ bedrooms.

Besides their multi-functionality and cost-efficiency, trundle beds also come in stylish designs to fit any room décor and household color. With a unique mix of traditional and contemporary flavor, trundle beds tickle the imaginations of home designers. They are usually made of solid wood or metal, making them strong and durable.
