A sleeper couch is a piece of household furniture that is designed to be a combination of a couch and bed. Also known in other terms such as “sofa bed” and “convertible sofa,” a sleeper couch is a piece of furniture that can be converted into a bed or into a sofa by simply folding it out or folding it in. If in the form of a couch, it can be folded out to be a bed. And if it is the form of a bed, it can be folded in to get back to being a couch.

Sleeper couches are a popular choice for people whose homes or rooms have limited space. They save room space by allowing an effective way of “hiding” or “keeping” the bed away when not needed.

Brief history of the sleeper couch

Sleeper couches date back to the 1930s and 1940s. The first sleeper couches had thin mattresses and limited few padding. Some of sleeper couches’ earliest forms simply collapsed to spread on the floor, making them and be appropriate for sleeping purposes. Others simply had a frame folded inside the sofa and a thin mattress. The sleeper couch is often used in homes where there are several people living together.

Types of sleeper couch

Modern sleeper couches already come in various styles and designs to provide more choices to consumers. Furniture manufacturers now allow consumers to order their regular couches as sleeper couches.

Most sleeper couches require that you take off the couch cushion so you can fold the bed out and use it for sleep. However, there are also futon type sleeper couches that automatically collapse and spread out for use as bed. Futon is usually composed of a wool or cotton futon mattress and a wooden bed frame.

Sleeper couches come in regular bed sizes: twin or single, full or bed, queen size, and king size. The type and size of sleeper couch depends on your needs, preferences, and available room space.

Choosing a sleeper couch

One thing that you have to remember is that thicker mattress provides more comfortable sleeping space. While you can replace the mattress of your sleeper couch, it would mean additional expenses, not to mention that getting mattress replacement can be costly. It would be better to buy a sleeper couch with thicker bed mattress to avoid this trouble and added expenditure.

Drawbacks of using a sleeper couch

Sleeper couches are usually heavy so if you tend to move from one place or home to another quite often, you might not find sleeper couches ideal.
