Murphy beds are types of bed that can be flipped up or propped up in a wall closet or cabinet. Also known as wall beds or fold away beds, Murphy beds have mattresses attached to their bed frames through bolts placed at each of the four bed corners. Like trundle beds, Murphy beds are also used to save floor space in a room. That’s why they are usually not equipped with box springs, foot boards, headboards, or bed railings.

Murphy beds can usually be found in homes with limited bedroom space such as apartments and mobile homes. They are usually incorporated in modular cabinets along with lighting, mirrors, or glass. Sometimes, additional cabinet units are added for storage of other objects such as entertainment and computer appliances such as television, radio, and computers. This style of Murphy bed storage has been used since the late 1900s. Some Murphy bed closets are also modified to also serve as storage for clothes and bedding.

Murphy beds were patented by William Murphy in 1916. He put up the Murphy Wall Bed Company soon after that and began manufacturing Murphy beds in San Francisco.

Styles of Murphy beds

The classic style of Murphy beds is one wherein the head end of the bed is permanently attached to the inside of a wall closet or cabinet. Once the bed is flipped over or folded away, the closet doors can be closed to conceal the bed. Sometimes, the wall closet does not have doors for cover, instead the bottom of the bed is simply made solid so that once the bed is flipped up, it only appears to be a part of the bedroom or living room wall, wherever it is placed.

Another Murphy bed style is one that is mounted on a swing arm that pivots the bed between the closet and the room. There is also a Murphy bed style wherein the head end of the bed is on casters. This kind of Murphy bed can be rolled for use into any room. It can also be kept in any closet that is large enough for it to fit in. Sometimes, Murphy bed closets are expanded for clothes and bedding storage.

A special type of bed called the hideaway bed also serves another purpose besides being a piece of furniture for sleep. Serving as a shelf or desk when folded up, this kind of bed was first patented by Sarah Goode in 1885.

I am a new resident to Massachusetts and I brought my Sleep Comfort bed with me!
Now I am renting a small studio apartment in a senior apartment complex.
    I want a Murphy Bed!
There is a seven foot wide alcove where I want my Queen sized Select Comfort bed to be encased in a Murphy Bed type cabinet. Is this possible? Can Sleep Comfort and Murphy Bed join forces to give me what I desire?
Oh, and when the bed is folded up, I would like a table to drop down. ;-)
Thanks ever so much for considering my request.

    Sincerely,
    Jane E. Fry
